Sewanee

Sewanee is home to one of the nation’s top liberal arts colleges and a seminary of the Episcopal Church. Since its founding, the University of the South has graduated 27 Rhodes Scholars, 53 Watson Fellows, dozens of Fulbright Scholars, and 35 NCAA Postgraduate Scholars, while the institution’s School of Theology has added to its alumni ranks countless bishops, including three of the last five presiding bishops of the Episcopal Church.

Sewanee, as the University is familiarly known, is located atop the Cumberland Plateau between Nashville and Chattanooga, Tennessee. Sewanee’s physical environment, which includes a 13,000-acre campus, provides an unparalleled place in which to study and reflect, and has, over its history, become a meeting place for some of America’s most respected literary figures. In addition to its traditionally strong curriculum in the arts and humanities, Sewanee is also known for its science programs, including the unique interdisciplinary Sewanee integrated program in the environment. Whether a student is interested in arts or sciences, Sewanee provides a challenging and nurturing environment that helps each achieve their very best.

Downtown Sewanee has amenities to complement everything available at the University. A short five-minute bike ride from main campus, the village is home to a bank, a post office, an art gallery, a gas station, a park, a bicycle shop, gift shops, a convenience store, a florist, a weekly farmers market and five restaurants (soon to be six)—quite a lot for a town of over 2,600.
